Discussion Questions (week 6)

Here are this week's discussion questions:

  • How many different kinds/forms of writing can you identify in the book? How do these forms interact or conflict with each other? with the subject matter? What form seems most useful? most unusual? most clear? most confusing? most interesting? most informative? most innovative?
  • What contexts do you share with the narrator? with Jon? What social/cultural/political/personal contexts does the book comment on or point toward?
  • Where/when is there a shift in attitude toward Jon? In what ways is he variously represented to the reader? Can you identify any correlation between these shifts/changes in attitude/representation and formal activity (large or small, at the level of the section/page through the level of the individual letter/punctuation)?
  • Can you characterize the language used throughout the book? What does an Eleni Sikelianos sentence sound/look/feel like? Could you try an imitation sentence or paragraph in writing about yourself or a family member of your own?
